Pages 209-219
“None: unless it avail him somewhat, that he was broken down by long and exquisite suffering; that his mind was darkened and confused by the very remorse which harrowed it… page 209.”
I think that Roger Chillingworth should just get over himself. He’s already lost Hester Prynne so what’s the point of trying to make Reverend Dimesdale suffer. It’s not going to make Hester come back to him. He just needs to realize that she has moved on from him. It bugs me though, the way he wants to make Mr. Dimesdale suffer.
“ Let us not look back, answered Hester Prynne, page 211.”
Hester seems like she is becoming happier. She has pretty much gotten over the whole scarlet letter ordeal. And she doesn’t want to deal with all that drama anymore either. I think it’s good that she is moving on. Why live in the past when all it does is hurt you. So I’m happy that Hester is moving on.

Pages 220-230
“ The mid-ocean shalt take it from my hand, and swallow it up forever! page 220.”
I think that when they leave the town they will find a lot more better things out there for them. They apparently want the town to fail and disappear. So I think it is best if they leave because no one in the town is treating them nicely. But I like how the author uses a metaphor in this part of the book. It made it really stand out to me.
“But on days to come, he will walk hand in hand with us, page 221 ”
I think that someday Hester, Mr. Dimesdale, and Pearl are going to be a family. I think they would be happy as a family. Mr. Dimesdale is the only person besides her mother that loves Pearl. She isn't a bad girl, it's just she defiends her mom alot. And doesnt want to see her mom get her more then she already is.

Pages 231-241
“ Her face, so long familiar to the townspeople, showed the marble quietude to which they were accustomed to behold there, page 236.”
People will always remember what Hester looks like. And by remembering her face then will remember the scarlet letter. I think that sucks for Hester because technically it will always follow her no matter what. Because everyone knows about it. But she could always move into a different town if she wanted.
“ Yet a little while, and she will be beyond your reach! A few hours longer, and the deep mysterious ocean will quench and hide forever the symbol which ye have caused to burn upon her bosom! Page 237.”
I’m happy for Hester that soon she will be leaving because the town just makes her feel so guilty and bad. I think that she is happy that she will leave too because finally she will be able to live her life without the scarlet letter. She will be living a guilt free life. And she wouldn’t have to care about what people are thinking about the scarlet letter. Also Pearl wont always have to protect her mother from everyone.

Pages 242-252
“…he appeared to recognize, and did not hesitate to address her, page 244.”
Everyone even people who don’t even know her seem to know about the scarlet letter on Hester’s bosom. It is like no matter where she goes everyone already knows. And she doesn’t benefit from it at all. She maybe one of the most people talked about in the town, but what they say isn’t very nice. No one wants to befriend Hester, just because of what she did. They don’t want to be seen as a weirdo or something that is talking to an outcast in the town or society.
“”Pearl either saw and responded to her mother’s feelings, or herself the remoteness and intangibility that had fallen around the minister, page 250”
Pearl sticks up for her mom a lot. I like that about her character. She would so anything to protect her mom from the mean and rude towns people. Pearl seems to be the stronger one out of her and her mother. She doesn’t back down from anything, she mostly speaks her mind. But I think that’s because she’s at a young age. And little children always speak their mind aloud and never keep it to themselves.

Pages 253-263
“ If thou callest me that ill name, I shall tell him of thee. And will chase the ship with tempest! Page 562.”
Pearl right here doesn’t seems like she is scared of anything. If she got hid with a ball or something like that she would just get up and throw it back harder then it hit her. I guess I’m trying to say she is a smart mouth. But she uses it to defined other people like her mother. And her father in this case.
“ The mean of rank and dignity who stood more immediately around the clergyman, were so taken by surprise… page 263.”
I think that it really shocked the towns people and clergymen to find out about Mr. Dimesdale and Hester Prynne. I think anyone would be shocked to find that out. I know I would if I had no clue to what was going on. I guess it kind of make them mad because they didn’t know about it and its lying. But it was the best for them to keep it a secret because if they found out earlier they could’ve been shunned from the town.

Pages2 264-274
“ God’s eye beheld it! The angels were forever pointing at it! The devil knew it well, and fretted it continually with the touch of his burning finger! Page 265”
The only person I guess who say it coming was Roger Chillingworth . And it was probably killing him on the inside to keep it all in like that. And it pretty much made everyone mad when they found out. But what can they do, they did it and there’s no turning back.
“ Shall we not spend our immortal life together? Page 267”
I feel really sad for Hester Prynne and Mr. Dimesdale because they won’t be able to be with each other anymore. It made me really sad just reading that part of the paragraph. That they would be able to be with each other for the rest of their lives. It makes me not like Roger Chillingworth’s character even more now. I don’t know why though.
“ ON A FIELD, SABLE, THE LETTER A, GULES, page 274.”
I think that the tombstone represents all of those years Hester spent with the scarlet letter. It makes me sad that Hester had to lose like that. I think she deserve more now. But I guess now she and Roger Chillingworth are even. Since now he’s wearing a scarlet letter.
